a Mobile First World – now for SEO too

We know we live in a world where people expect answers at their fingertips, the nearest device to hand is what we use. More than 1 in 4 users only use a smartphone in an average day—almost 2X as many as those who only use a computer. The mobile friendly message re website development has been with us for a couple of years and considered a standard requirements of all websites but we’re moving deeper into mobile now.

The future of Mobile Search – Mobile First Indexing

Currently, when users search for something on their mobile using the Google search engine, Google uses a desktop-based index to deliver results. Its ranking system then typically looks at the desktop version of a page’s content to evaluate its relevance to the user’s query.

Starting in 2018 we expect to see a reversal of this meaning your desktop site will be indexed and ranked based on the mobile version of the index! So not only do we need to ensure that the website displays well on mobile and passes the Google Mobile Friendly test  but we now need to consider the SEO implications. Google says that there is no need to panic and the full roll out of the mobile first indexing will be slow but in our opinion early adopters will only benefit.

Regardless of the timeframe for Google switching to a mobile-first index, mobile needs to be a huge priority for your business’s web presence. The era of smartphone saturation is probably the biggest change in consumer behaviour that businesses have seen in the last decade.

We can’t ignore that we live in a mobile-first world. We’ll be publishing more specific and some technical info on mobile first throughout 2018.
